Colorado's "monsoon season" (more precisely called the North American Monsoon or Southwest Monsoon) is a seasonal shift in wind patterns that brings a surge of moisture and afternoon-thunderstorms to the Rockies, typically from mid-July through late August.
During summer, the intense heating of the desert Southwest creates a thermal low-pressure area. This causes the wind pattern to reverse from its drier winter/spring flow (out of the west) to a more southerly and southeasterly flow that draws moisture up from the Gulf of California and, to a lesser extent, the Gulf of Mexico. That moisture gets pulled into Colorado, especially over the high terrain.
What it looks like in the mountains
Building clouds by late morning — clear skies at sunrise, cumulus clouds forming by 10-11am
Afternoon thunderstorms — typically firing up between noon and 4pm as mountain slopes heat unevenly and force air upward
Short, intense bursts — heavy rain, hail, lightning, and gusty winds, often lasting only 30-60 minutes per storm
Clearing by evening — skies often clear out by dinnertime, leaving clear nights
This is different from a tropical monsoon's constant deluge — it's more of a daily rhythm than a season-long soak.
Why it matters for people in the Rockies
Lightning risk — this is the single biggest hazard. The "climb high, get down low" rule exists because of monsoon timing: hikers are strongly advised to summit peaks and be below tree line before early afternoon.
Flash flooding — burn scars from wildfires are especially vulnerable to sudden flash floods during monsoon storms, since scorched soil doesn't absorb water well.
Wildfire relief — despite the flooding risk, monsoon moisture is often a welcome check on fire season, dampening fuels after a dry June.
Variability — some years the monsoon is "active" with reliable daily storms; other years it's "weak" and the Rockies stay dry and fire-prone through summer.
