FOLBR - Friends Of the Lower Blue River

For the Record

Recent misinformation has been circulating suggesting that Friends of the Lower Blue River (FOLBR) plans to implement a permit system for boating on the Lower Blue River. We want to be clear: FOLBR has no authority to create or enforce such a system, and we have no plans to do so.

We understand why rumors like this can cause concern, and we take seriously our responsibility to communicate openly with the community we serve.

Our mission is straightforward: to sustain and protect the traditional agricultural character of the Lower Blue River Valley, promote the safety of residents, livestock, and wildlife, and maintain the river's environmental integrity — through education, collaboration, and community involvement. That hasn't changed.

Across local, state, and federal levels, stakeholders are actively working together to better understand current river conditions and identify practical, balanced solutions that protect the river for future generations. FOLBR is a participant in that conversation — not a decision-maker acting alone.

We also want to recognize the landowners who are making real sacrifices by forgoing portions of their water rights to keep water flowing during low-flow conditions. Their choices matter. Without them, some stretches of the Blue could see little to no flow at all.

FOLBR has been a consistent advocate for this river. In 2020, we helped lead the effort to stop a proposed gravel pit along the river's banks. We continue to monitor mining activities in the area and will oppose any efforts that threaten the health of the river and surrounding lands.

We are currently working with partners to develop a Lower Blue River Sustainability Plan — focused on protecting the river, honoring the valley's agricultural heritage, and supporting safe and responsible use by everyone who values this place.

We remain committed to the Lower Blue River and to the community that depends on it. If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to reach out directly.
